cartocogli began with a simple observation: too many adults had lost touch with the joy of making things. In conversations with friends and colleagues, the same sentiment kept emerging. People missed creating. They remembered childhood art classes fondly but felt intimidated by the idea of starting again as adults.
In 2019, we opened our first small studio in Fitzroy with just three workshop offerings. The response exceeded every expectation. Word spread quickly through the community, and within months we had waiting lists for nearly every session.

We believe that creativity is not a talent reserved for the few. It is a fundamental human capacity that, with the right guidance and environment, can flourish in anyone. Our mission is to remove the barriers that prevent people from exploring their creative potential.
That means welcoming beginners without judgment. It means providing high-quality materials and equipment so participants can experience what it feels like to work with professional tools. It means creating a space where mistakes are celebrated as part of the learning process.
Our Approach
Every workshop at cartocogli follows a carefully developed curriculum that balances structure with creative freedom. We introduce technical skills progressively, allowing participants to build confidence through achievable challenges before tackling more complex projects.
Small class sizes are central to our model. With a maximum of eight participants per session, our instructors can provide individual attention and adapt their teaching to each person's pace and interests. This personalised approach accelerates learning and ensures no one gets left behind.
Our Instructors
The heart of cartocogli is our team of practising artists and craftspeople. Each instructor maintains an active creative practice alongside their teaching work, ensuring they bring fresh perspectives and current techniques into the studio.
They come from diverse backgrounds: trained potters who studied in Japan, photographers whose work hangs in galleries, woodworkers who have built furniture for decades. What unites them is a genuine enthusiasm for sharing their knowledge and watching others discover the satisfaction of skilled making.
Looking Forward
As we grow, our commitment to quality and community remains unchanged. We continue to add new workshop offerings based on participant feedback and emerging interests. Recent additions include bookbinding, printmaking, and collaborative mural painting.
We are also expanding our open studio hours, giving workshop graduates more opportunities to continue practising their skills independently while remaining connected to the cartocogli community.
